pblc shows places from open data. Here's where they come from, and what each source asks.
How it's made
• Source: Overture Maps Foundation's divisions, release 2026-09-23.1 (division and division_area). Their own sources: OpenStreetMap (ODbL 1.0), and Esri Community Maps, LINZ, DadosAbertos and Maps Entity Variant Names (CC0 1.0 or CC BY 4.0).
• Kept: macrohoods, neighborhoods and microhoods whose OpenStreetMap place type is a neighbourhood (neighbourhood, suburb, borough, quarter, district, subdivision, city block, community, village, hamlet, town, civil parish, subward). Squares, fields and farms are left out.
• A macrohood with two or more neighbourhoods in it is an area; a quarter inside a neighbourhood is one of its names; the rest are neighbourhoods. A town of the source inside a bigger city (Brooklyn, in New York City) is an area of that city.
• Each neighbourhood is filed under the city an address there is filed under (GeoNames towns of 1,000 people or more). Montréal is on the City of Montréal's own open data instead.
• Outlines: the source's, simplified to 12 m and rounded to 5 decimals. A neighbourhood the source has only as a point gets an approximate outline (approximate: true): the part of its town closer to it than to the town's other neighbourhoods (a Voronoi cell), within 2 km of its point.
• Our edits: a neighbourhood the team renamed shows its new name (name); official_name is the source's.
• Made by packages/scripts/src/hoods/load-hoods.ts (derive, load, names, export).
